EduScrum – The Empowerment of Students in Engineering Education?

The students are not all alike. It is one of the characteristics of the human species that makes it especially adaptable to the formation of communities: people complement each other. So, if students have different characteristics, rigid learning methods will hardly be successful. One can try to find a lowest common denominator, but we all know what that means: waisting most of the students' potential. One can conclude that there is no single pedagogical approach that can be applied to all students. But the approach proposed by eduScrum* (with course specific adjustments) seems to provide a reference model compatible with almost all students. What is eduScrum? EduScrum is a framework for coaching students, where the responsibility for the learning process is delegated from teachers to students. It is inspired in the Scrum project management methodology, thus based on teamwork, sprints and a commitment to quality. In this paper, we present the results of applying the eduScrum method, with minor adjustments, to a Calculus course in the Informatics Engineering program (Bologna 1st cycle - 180 ECTS), and how to deploy this method on other courses in a engineering program. *http://eduscrum.nl/en/ Keyworks: EduScrum, Active learning, Learning Assessment, Standards: 8, 11
