Abstract

Turku University of Applied Sciences has applied CDIO standards in ICT engineering education since 2007. In this paper, we will report how the use of innovation pedagogy and CDIO principles have not only influenced in our game development education but also in our RDI and business driven activities. Our previous experiences have been reported in various papers [1-4]. Now we will focus on presenting an Innovation Generation Model which will illustrate our strategies to utilize students’ capabilities as an important factor in our RDI and business development.

Our Innovation Generation Model will be concretized with three case studies. The first one called Pikkuli Case will concretize how results achieved in innovation projects have been used as a seed in RDI project with a relatively large external funding (including governmental and industrial funding). The second case study namely Rockodile Games Case, in turn, will be used as an example of our innovation projects which have lead in startup activities (including StartUp Journey and incubator phase). Finally, in our third case called NeuroCar Case we will focus on reporting how scientific high quality research (namely cognitive neuro science) and our game development activities have lead from innovation projects to business driven RDI project in which objectives are in generating new business from achieved research results.
