Biography

 

Professor Malcolm Joyce BSc PhD CEng FNI CPhys FInsP, is Head of the Department of Engineering and Professor of Nuclear Engineering at Lancaster.

He leads a research group in the field of nuclear instrumentation with interests across applications in the medical, nuclear power and analytical sectors.

He has published over 90 refereed journal papers. His interest in the medical research area covers the use of inertial systems for respiratory gated therapy, the use of MOSFET devices in the detection of dose in radiotherapy and engineering applications in the rehabilitation of speech impairments and dysphagia.

In the power sector field, he is interested in advanced methods of decommissioning analysis, proliferation resistance and contamination imaging.

Much of Professor Joyce’s research is based on the digital discrimination of mixed radiation fields, and he is the co-founder and Technical Director of a company, Hybrid Instruments Ltd, that manufactures instruments for this purpose.

Professor Joyce’s teaching interests cover electronics, nuclear engineering, nuclear safety, nuclear medicine and engineering mathematics.

In 2004 he was awarded a Lancaster University Staff Prize for commercialisation activities, and in 2005 he was awarded a national teaching prize form the Royal Academy of Engineering.
